Montana et MarocThe members of the GHS French Club are devoted to not only helping their community through service projects (Check out Opération Bonheur!) but also provided assistance to other students learning French abroad. We have partnered with MSU French Department and the Montana based Atlas Cultural Foundation to help support education programs for young Moroccan students learning French.
Megan Guillory, a GHS French Program alumni and current French major at MSU, arrived at GHS in the spring of 2015 to share about her three weeks in Morocco helping teach English to students in a remote mountain village. Her stirring photos of students with few school supplies and stories of limited access to education inspired our students to reach out and see how we could help. Additionally, we are thrilled to support not only a local company (ACF is based in Bozeman, MT) but also it's founder, Cloe Erickson, who is a Flathead native! |

What is ACF?A non denominational and non political organization, the Atlas Cultural Foundation works to collaborate with rural Moroccans in order to improve their quality of life in the fields of cultural preservation, community education, and public health.
As a group, our GHS students are most interested in helping the students gain an education, especially girls. We feel a kinship with these students as we are learning to speak French too! |
How Will We Help?
In the fall, French students volunteered their time at a local soccer game working in the concessions stand. Students earned over $600 and voted as a group to donate half of the funds to ACF. The remaining half will help pay for GHS students' National French Test fees and Language Distinction honorees.
We're excited to announce that our funds will be used for their after school tutoring program!
Elementary School Tutoring Program
In 2012, ACF began a tutoring program for the villages of Aguddim and Amezray. The program provides free tutoring to all pre-K and elementary school students in these two villages. Approximately 160 students attend the program each day. The program is held at the local association buildings and is taught by two local teachers. The program runs six days per week and eleven months a year. The primary goal of this program is to supplement the education provided by the Moroccan government and collaborate with the government teachers to help them improve the test scores of the local students.

During the week before Christmas break, French Club students in all French classes will be given a chance to write letters in French, draw photos with messages, and take photos for the Moroccan students that we are helping.
Our letters were delivered in March to the Moroccan students!
